…and distractions.
OK, I confess, this hasn’t been a terribly productive week. Yes, I’ve been unwell and I don’t do “unwell” well (Editor’s Note: Maybe that last sentence isn’t the best…). However, that stuff happens and as a copywriter you have to deal with it.
But yes, what do you do when you have the “blahs”, everything is an effort and you can’t really be bothered to do anything?
Strategy #1 is…don’t do anything! This sort of thing happens to pretty much everyone from time to time. Could just mean you need a break. If you’re unwell you definitely need a break! Time will usually fix the problem. However, with this strategy you need to make up lost ground later on.
Strategy #2 is…do something! Anything as long as you keep moving forward. Ideally it’s something that’s productive. However, it’s amazing how action of any kind starts to produce results.
I’ve found it helps greatly in these circumstances if you have a schedule and an existing plan for what to do. I’m sure I’m not the only person who sometimes finds the hardest thing is actually deciding what to do! Once I know what to do, actually doing it isn’t so much of a problem.
And if you’re lacking inspiration, just write anything. The act of writing will clear away the cobwebs and often something useful will emerge.
The other problem this week has been…distractions! Despite promising myself not to get diverted, I find myself at the end of the week having 2 or 3 new books to read, on top of the 2 that were my “top priority” at the beginning of the week.
Sigh. There’s just too much interesting stuff out there!
In these circumstances I have to force myself to remember the “2 Most Important Decisions” at the heart of Mark Joyner’s “Simpleology” system..
1. Will I choose to take action that takes me closer to my goals?
2. Will I make decisions that strengthen my power or weaken it?
In other words, are those interesting distractions helping me to get where I want to go? Most times, the answer is “No” of course and that makes it easier to get back to what I should be doing.
