As a copywriter, you can gain some useful insights from popular movies and TV shows to make your copywriting more compelling and effective.
There are a number of reasons for this…
1. Firstly, movies and TV shows are in the business of appealing to emotions. And it’s emotions that provide the impact in copy and get people to take action.
2. Secondly, good movies and shows are examples of the art of storytelling, another important part of copywriting.
3. Thirdly, popular movies and shows give an insight into the prevailing “Social Mood” and how people are thinking.
Now, I’m sure it has not escaped your attention that the movie version of “Sex And The City” was released recently. And it’s been a big success at the box office, despite some mixed reviews.
Interestingly, the divide amongst the reviewers appeared to be very much along gender lines! The ladies basically loved the movie and the guys were less impressed.
So what does that tell us? Well, the men seem to be missing something that clearly appeals very strongly to women. This comment from the local paper caught my eye…
“Carrie Bradshaw and her cohorts spoke to professional women who fancied themselves as sassy, powerful and poised to uncover the ultimate truth in their quest for love.”
Interesting.
Now, as a copywriter, it is essential to understand your audience, the people you are writing to. If women form a large part of the target audience then it’s important that your message resonates with them, or at least doesn’t alienate them.
It’s something of a truism to say that men struggle to understand women, but if you’re a male copywriter writing to women, you need to make a big effort to understand your audience and what will appeal to them.
And look at the demographic for “SATC” – “Professional Women”. That’s a very attractive market (hey…no puns intended here…so let’s not go there!!!).
So, keep an eye on popular movies. They can provide some useful insights.
I’ll talk more about “Social Mood” and writing to a female audience in future posts.
